Expedition 3: The Greenwids

Image
Player created map. Expedition Party: Gregor, Reike, Gossamer In the time between expeditions Gregor talks to the Governor about starting a post office, who suggests that Gregor is welcome to open a post office, but the town is limited on resources, so it will be up to him. After asking around town for rumors Gossamer learns that a hunter spotted a golden fox. After speaking with the Governor, Reike learns that there is a reward in gold for each member of the original garrison found.  After hearing of the golden fox Reike uses his Feather Quill to make a map between Stortherhine and the den of the Golden Fox. The den looks to be tucked into a hillside beneath what appears on the map as a giant fallen tree; it looks like it's a couple days' journey into the oak and hickory forest to the west of Stortherhine.  On the first day of the expedition the party sets out for the forest to the west. The weather is clear and warm and the party is making good time. Once in the woods they d...

Expedition 2: The Burning Weald

Player created map. Expedition Party: Gossamer, Barnaby, Feodor After collecting supplies the party sets out for a pine forest west of town. They travel through a forest of razor grass and longleaf pines. As they navigate the woods they start to notice strange looking ivy and massive tortoises that dig maze-like burrows. Eventually they come to a large section so choked with the red tipped ivy that they can not continue without making contact with it. The party decides the unknown plant is best avoided and goes around it, adding more time to their journey. By afternoon they discover a massive earthworks spiral made of salt and stone. It is in a large clearing among the pines. While investigating it Gossamer notices his heirloom amulet glowing and his rabbit’s foot twitching. He knows this must have something to do with witch magic. The group makes camp and have a largely uneventful night. But each watch notices deer with bizarre looking antlers in the darkness beyond their modest campf...

Expedition 1: The Fields of Moseley

The burlap map,  transferred  from the table in the Culling Hammer.  Expedition Party: Gossamer, Barnaby, Feodor, Gregor In late Spring the players arrive via ship to the town of Stortherhine,  a small garrison tucked in a saltmarsh on the edge of the known world. They are confronted with a ghost town of empty overgrown buildings and no evidence of what has become of the garrison of 50 that had been left there.  The players search the town and decide to take up residence in a large mill building that appeared to also be serving as a public house. Outside the building a water wheel slowly turns in a spring fed stream and a wooden sign hangs reading "The Culling Hammer." An actual culling hammer also hangs from the bottom of the sign. Inside they discover the remnants of a map scratched into a table. They grab a burlap grain sac and using some burnt wood from the fire place transfer the image of the map and make a plan to transfer that to something more long lasti...

Strotherhine, West Marches or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Cairn 2e

Image
The town of Strotherhine  Introduction I have been running a West Marches campaign using the Cairn 2e Playtest since September. There are currently 8 players and 1 warden and we have played a total of 8 game sessions. The entire campaign is organized on a discord server which is also what I have been using to run the games. We use a bot for dice rolling. There is a joint Inkarnate account that is used for mapping the world (the image is the current map the players have created) and we use a discord whiteboard "activity" as a place to make quick drawings for clarification (this activity has recently added the ability to save work so it has become very helpful). When I am running the game I also occasionally use screen share and a lot of screen snips that I post in the discord chat. My players really only need discord open + character information and notes during the game. I really look forward to character keeper, because right now I am hopping between a lot of Google docs in ...
