Expedition 1: The Fields of Moseley
The burlap map, transferred from the table in the Culling Hammer.
In late Spring the players arrive via ship to the town of Stortherhine, a small garrison tucked in a saltmarsh on the edge of the known world. They are confronted with a ghost town of empty overgrown buildings and no evidence of what has become of the garrison of 50 that had been left there.
The players search the town and decide to take up residence in a large mill building that appeared to also be serving as a public house. Outside the building a water wheel slowly turns in a spring fed stream and a wooden sign hangs reading "The Culling Hammer." An actual culling hammer also hangs from the bottom of the sign.
Inside they discover the remnants of a map scratched into a table. They grab a burlap grain sac and using some burnt wood from the fire place transfer the image of the map and make a plan to transfer that to something more long lasting in the near future. After speaking with the Governor of the garrison, who arrived on the same ships that they did, the players decide to head out into the wilds in search of the missing garrison.
The next day they travel south into a rolling landscape of high grasses and wildflowers. They discover the corpse of a larger than usual wolf, its head several paces away from the rest of its remains. Curiously there is also horse droppings in the area.
They continue traveling and find the ruins of a stone tower resting on a small hill, above a spring fed pond. Inside the tower they discover the remnants of a small camp, a few empty casks and a fire pit full of ashes. Among those ashes they discover the remains of a note mentioning a lone oak on a hill in an area riddled with lakes and ponds.
They climb the tower to get a sense of the surrounding area and discover the fields further south have many small bodies of water. With daylight quickly fading the group decides to return to Strotherhine and call it a night at the Culling Hammer.
